I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to do a "digital signature". I have no idea how you're supposed to sign your name digitally.

Thanks,

Michelle,

If you're signing a legal document electronically, an /s/ before your name is enough to signify a signature.

For example:

Sincerely,
/s/ Michelle

If you want a picture of your actual signature, the easiest thing to do is sign with a sharpie or something and scan it in, and put that picture where you want your signature to be.

It's not really a "legal document" that I need a digital signature for. What I'm wanting it for is when making a claim on "copyright infringement". A lot of web sites out there ask you for a "digital signature" when you claim your copyright has been infringed. They don't seem very helpful when you don't provide them with everything they ask for - including a "digital signature". It's very frustrating!

What you suggested with scanning your signature, it would then be just like a gif file wouldn't it? Couldn't that be tampered with? Also, in the wrong hands, someone could use it to pass themselves off as me - and claim to be the copyright holder.

I've looked at a digital signature site based here in NZ, they have software to do professional digital signatures etc, though at a yearly cost. I can't afford it.

Michelle,

I forgot you were in NZ. I suggest you speak with an attorney then.

Here in America, an /s/ before your name serves as a signature. I have no idea how it works in New Zealand.
